Next Session: Jan. 12, 5:30-7:30pm

Learn to play (or officiate) roller derby! This is Rated PG's beginner course, no skating experience necessary! Program runs for 15 weeks and meets every Thursday 5:30 to 7:30. The program costs $150 plus $50 for insurance. First week is free so you can give it a try. Roller derby is an exciting and challenging sport that will make you sweat and you get to join an awesome community! 18+ all genders welcome.

We have skates and pads you can borrow. Please bring a mouth guard, helmet, water bottle and running shoes.

What is Fresh Meat?

Our fresh meat program is an 11 week program for anyone 19+ that teaches the basic skills you need to play. Men and women of all ages (19+), athletic abilities, and skating abilities are welcome. You will learn the rules of the game as well as some essential skills such as stopping, falling safely, crossovers, helping your teammates, skating faster, hitting, and blocking.  At the end of the 11 weeks, you will take a test -- the same test all Rated PG Rollergirls need to take annually.  If you pass,  you will be invited to join the team.  If you don't quite make it, it's no big deal and you are welcome to try again.

Why Join Fresh Meat?

We get that joining something like roller derby can be scary. Fresh meat not only allows you to learn how to skate, but gives you a chance to form friendships with your future teammates. When you do join the team, you won't be alone.

If you've talked to a Rollergirl you have probably gotten an earful about how much they love the sport. We love to promote the sport. When you start playing derby you are not only welcomed into your local derby family, but an amazing world wide derby network.

What do I need?

  • Helmet -- a bike helmet is fine, but hockey helmets and skateboard helmets are best.
  • Wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads -- we have a few extras to lend out.
  • Mouth guard -- you can find an assortment at any sports store.
  • Skates -- your fees include rentals, but you will probably want your own as you develop your skills.
Fresh meat packages are available online from Rollergirl, a Vancouver based derby store.  Ask any ref of derby girl for advice on what to buy.

What is Roller Derby Anyway?

Roller derby is a full contact sport played on roller skates.  It's origins date back to the 1930s, but fell from popularity in the 80s and 90s.  It reemerged as an all female amateur sport in the early 2000s and has been gaining momentum since.  Men's, coed, and junior teams are also growing in popularity.  The basic idea of the game is that one player, the jammer, needs to get past the other teams blockers.  Watch the video below for a short description of the rules.

I'd love to, but...

If you're reading this page, you are probably thinking about giving roller derby a try.  You also might be thinking something along the lines of "I'd love to but..."  We've taken a moment to address some of your concerns.

I'm too big/small/wide/skinny/short/lanky to play roller derby

The wonderful thing about roller derby is that it needs girls of all body types, a lot more than most sports. If you have a bigger frame, than you might become a heavy hitting blocker. If you are petite, then you might be best at nimbly weaving through the pack.  Body by Derby is a cool project aimed at showing the diversity of body types of derby players.  It also outlines the effect derby has had on it's players, which brings us to...

I'm too out of shape

Don't worry, derby will change that!! Roller derby is a whole lot more fun than going to the gym.  For many of us, roller derby was the catalyst that set us on the path to being fit and healthy. Not only do you get some fun exercise, but you will also be surrounded by women who want to help you reach your fitness goals.  A lot of us work out together and welcome fresh meat into our sessions.  A team that works out together sicks together!!

I'm too busy

It's true that roller derby can become time consuming, but you don't need to worry about that yet. Fresh meat is only one two hour session a week. When you are done with fresh meat, then you can reassess your schedule.

I'm not tough enough

You might surprise yourself.  Roller derby has a habit of bringing out people's inner super heroes. Remember that you aren't going to be starting by trying to knock people over.  Before we get to the full contact stuff, you will have a good handle on some basic skills, including how to fall safely and skate while being bumped or jostled.

I'm not really a team sports kind of girl

A lot of us weren't! Many of us were not athletic at all before roller derby.  There truly is something amazing about derby that turns regular people into athletes and team players.

I don't know how to roller skate

This is exactly why we have the fresh meat program. If you've ice skated before, that will give you a huge advantage. If you haven't been on any sort of skates, that's fine too.

I'm too old

Think of it this way. If you have read this far, you are probably really thinking about it. That's a very good sign that you are not too old. If someone has ever suggested that you join roller derby, that is another sign that you are not too old.
