The Rated PG Rollergirls squeek out a win against Grande Prairie Rage 'n' Fyre at our season opener game, Cold Slap Jan 21st. The final score was Rated PG 114 to Grande Prairie 94.

Derby Season is upon us, and the Rated PG Rollergirls have some exciting events coming up! First off, Oct. 22 there will be a a bootcamp, where new and beginning skaters who haven't passed their minimum skills test can work on developing basic skills and a basic understanding of gameplay. We would like to have skaters from all over the region to come and skate together and play together. The registration deadline is Oct. 22, but get on it a.s.a.p to take advantage of early-bird registration prices!

Second, we're holding our second annual Skatefest and would like to invite all qualified rollerderby players to attend! Last year's bout was a huge hit, and this year we're looking forward to hosting and playing with skaters from all over the region. Mixed teams will be developed based on skill levels to create equally matched teams to ensure a fantastic, competitive bout. AND (wait for it), this year, in addition to an invitational bout, we are also offering a bootcamp coached by Lulu Demon and 8 Mean Wheeler from TCRG! Heck yeah!

A handful of the Rated PG skaters just got back from Rollercon, a derby extravaganza in Las Vegas, Nevada, where gads of skaters converge annually for a weekend of derby work-and-play. On your left is a photo of some of the players that went, and below is a photo is a photo of Malice and Sistah with Quadzilla (a fierce skater and coach, who can do this amazing thing!). Our players learned heaps, and they're bringing all that knowledge to prepare for the upcoming season. More Vegas Photos here!

Another win! The Gold Rush Rumble in Quesnel was a huge success, and the Rated PG Rollergirls took home another win (111 to 178). But more importantly, Quesnel got their first taste of Derby, and they loved it! The Gold Pain team, made up of skaters from . . . It was an exciting game, jam packed full of hard hits and a few big pile-ups--much to the delight of the audience!

The Rated PG RollerGirls will be going head to head with a mixed team at the Gold Rush Rumble, hosted by the Gold Pain City Derby Girls during Billy Barker Days in Quesnel! It's only 118kms away and tickets are cheap cheap! So get together some friends and represent!

And don't forget, the RollerGirls will be lacing up for the Pride Parade on the 9th, as well as partaking in the rest of the Pride festivities that weekend!

So, the regular season is over for your Rated PG RollerGirls, but that doesn't mean they're going into hibernation. There will be plenty of derby related news and events to keep up with over the summer.

First off, we'll be hosting The Rated PG RollerGirls Night of Rawk, a night of local live music Friday, June 24th at the Riverstone. Gates of Oath will get everyone in the mood to dance and party with a couple of sets of classic and contemporary rawk. Highball Riot will finish the night off in a frenzy with a ska-punk reggae extravaganza. Come early as this evening is expected to be a capacity crowd!!!! Tickets are $10 at the door, and the first set starts at 8pm. Be there!

Watch out for the Rated PG float in the 15th annual PG Pride Parade, July 9th.

At the end of July, some of Rated PG's finest will be travelling to Las Vegas for Rollercon 2011!

And of course, we will be running Fresh Meat Practices on Thursdays from 7pm at the Roll-a-Dome. Get started now, so that you'll be ready to lace up in next season's games!

That Was Close!

We couldn't have asked for a better final home game this season! Although the Rated PG Rollergirls dominated the first half, the Kiss Me Deadlies came out strong in the second, and it was a close final score of 105 to 99 for PG.

May Player Profile: Torrent Skullpin

Name: Torrent Skullpin

Number: H2O

Torrent is a big fan favorite. If you're been to one of our bouts, you've probably heard her name being cheered. Heck, you were probably cheering it out yourself. Fair enough. She's an incredibly fast and agile jammer, and that's something to cheer about!

Off the track a lot of her passion is directed to the natural world and biology. At the same time, she has a major redneck side, and she finds it difficult to pass up an opportunity to slug back some beers outside around a fire or twist the throttle of her 250cc dirt bike.

1. How did you choose your derby name?
Torrent sculpin is a fish found in the Columbia River in the Kootenays, where I am from. I am also studying to be a fish biologist so the name holds double meaning for me.

2. What is your preferred (roller derby) position and why do you prefer it?
Jammer, because I am a slippery little skullpin ;) ie: I can get through holes in the pack much better than I can make them!

3. When and why did you start playing roller derby?
I started skating when the league first started up in 2008, but I was too busy with school to commit. As soon as classes ended, I jumped on the opportunity to release my aggressions! I used to snowboard 60+ days a season in the Kootenays, but the local mountains around PG just do not offer me the challenge I was used to. Derby filled the void. Not to mention the thrill of getting on roller skates again and doing it in a mini skirt!

4. How has the league changed in the time that you’ve been involved?
At first the leagues goal was to have 4 full teams of skaters, but now it's focussed on one kickass team of women! Our bouts are getting better each time as we refine our setup. We started out at the Civic centre with dry events, and we moved to the Roll A Dome, where we used the upstairs for a segregated beer garden. Now we have an ever-growing track-side beer garden! The energy in the Dome with all those happy fans is really incredible. The family section is great too, but the beer garden seems to cheer a little louder ;)

5. How have you changed in the time that you’ve been involved in derby?
Derby is the first team sport I have actively participated in so I guess I am learning the ins and outs of the team environment and how a team grows and is shaped by the individuals that make up the whole.

6. Aside from derby practices, how do you stay in shape?
Ummm, haha. I have a large dog who gets me out walking twice a day and I get out for the odd run or climb up random gravel hills or the cutbanks. Roller skating around my neighbourhood is one of my favourites :)

7. What is your favourite aspect of derby?
Definitely the sheer fun of wheeling around on skates. I feel like a kid every time I lace up :)

8. Describe your most memorable derby-moment.
My first time on the jammer line in my first bout. I was shaking with nerves. You have a pretty big target on your back as a jammer. It can be scary out there when women twice your size have full intentions of hitting you as hard as they can.

9. Any advice for girls who want to join roller derby?
Don't be intimidated by the girls who have been skating a lot longer than you! Derby is a steep learning curve. It took me a long time before I felt like I was actually aware of what was going on around me (which is A LOT) while in the pack!

10. You always paint your face elaborately before a game, and the fans love it! What made you decide to use face paints, and how do you come up with ideas for each game?
I started painting my face right from my very first bout. I wanted to do something fun for the fans but I am not very skilled with traditional make up applications to create an elaborate look so I went with a black and white skull look that sort of plays off my derby name. The look evolved with ideas I have taken from the internet but I have found one I like and stick with it for now. Seeing the looks on the kids faces when I did my derby zombie last October was pretty fantastic.

11. Word on the track is you just got accepted into grad studies in Edmonton. (Congratulations!) Do you plan on continuing with derby after you leave PG?
I will be taking a break over the summer because I will be spending most of my time doing field work in the North West Territories but I hope to have enough time in September to start skating with our good friends Oil City!

I have so many great memories to take with me from my time as a Rated PG Rollergirl and friendships that will last a lifetime. I am sure I will look back on these times when I am old with a tear or two in my eyes!

The Rated PG Rollergirls snagged a big win on Saturday (April 9th) against the Oil City Tank'er Girls. The PG skaters have really stepped up their game since the match against the Belladonna's last month, and they came to the track more unified than ever. It was a great match, and the Tank'er Girls gave them a good run for their money.

April Player Profile: Lockdown

Lockdown is known for her fierce hits and her hard-to-get-around booty-blocks. She has (and continues to be) one of our star pivots, setting the pace and calling out plays and instructions to her teammates on the track. Lately she's been working on her jamming skill too (watch out!).

1. How did you choose your derby number?

It was acquired by combining my year of birth and how old I was when I first played the game. But to make it easier on the refs, I go by 71 on the track now.

2. When and why did you start playing roller derby?

I started right after the Red vs Blue game, which was the first game for the Rated PG Rollergirls. My daughter Aimee and I had gone because she wanted to play. When we found out she wasn't old enough to play, she told me to go try it out, and I've been hooked ever since.

3. Did you have any experience skating before you joined?

I had never roller skated, but I've figure skated since I was 5.

4. What is your favourite off-track workout?

I love working out at Massich Stadium. Last summer Cruely put us through some intense workouts there.

5. Do you have any bout-day rituals, habits, or superstitions?

I like to remove myself from the locker room for a short time to just sit and relax. I also like to peek in on the opposing team during their warm-up skate.

6. Do you have a favourite song or quote to get you into derby mode?

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE TRACK STAYS ON THE TRACK!!!!

7. Describe your most memorable derby moment.

Hmmm. It was a very silly and weak moment, but I would have to say the day I threw my helmet at Sistah. What is memorable about it is that afterwards, any hard feelings were set aside, and we all went out for beer and food. Derby is an intense sport, and even though helmet-throwing isn't a regular occurrence, there are frustrating and heated moments on the track. It's comforting to know that WHAT HAPPENS ON THE TRACK STAYS ON THE TRACK--that despite all the (legal) hits and those (rare) weak moments, your derby family will still be there at the end of the game.

Another memorable moment was at our last game when a couple of young girls were going around asking for the players autographs.

8. What is your favourite aspect of derby?

My favourite aspect is the derby family that I have acquired.

9. Throughout the years, you've been instrumental in fostering connections between the league and the rest of the community. Why are community connections important?

When I first started, we had the support of the community, but saw potential for so many more parts of the community to come together with the sport. The rollergirls did car washes and it just grew from there. We try to make sure that the community doesn't stereotype us as the old style rollergirls where it was all about being vicious on the track. It is an extreme sport, but we want our personalities off the track to show through and we want the community to know that we are here to support them as we would like the support in return.

10. What are some of the community events that you have helped get the players involved with?

A few of the things have been the Harley Davidson bike wash for Cystic Fibrosis, bowling for big brothers and sisters, the Chilli Blanket Rally. Loki got together a team for the CIBC Run for the Cure, and I was on that. I'm also trying to get a Roller Derby demo on the agenda for the 2015 Winter Games . . .

11. Any advice for girls who want to join derby?

It is an amazing way to get in shape and join a family of women that encourage and strengthen each other.

Vs. The Red Deer Belladonnas

The Rated PG RollerGirls experienced their first inter-league loss on Saturday in their game against the Red Deer Belladonnas. While the final score was 245 to 65, the Rated PG Skaters played hard until the end, making the Belladonnas work for their points. All-in-all, it was a fun game, and spirits were high throughout the bout, despite the gap in the score score.

Currently, the Red Deer Belladonnas are placed 6th in Canadian Roller Derby Ranking, and having the opportunity to play such an excellent team will help the Rated PG RollerGirls

step it up a notch and take their skills to the next level . . . just in time for their April 9th rematch against the Oil City Tank'er Girls at the Roll A Dome!

March Player Profile: Cruely Sue

Those of you who have been following PG derby can vouch for the fact that Cruely is one of the fastest skaters on our track. What you may not know is that she's PG born and bred, she has a five-year-old daugher, she works at Top Drawer Yarn Studio, and she just launched a kick-ass crafting blog with Scissor Tits (aka ohsweetie, Diandra Jurkic-Walls). Oh yeah, and she hits like a half-tonne pickup.

1. What is your derby number?

My number used to be x0, but i changed it last season to fu2, which is a little more 'me'. Let's just say i swear often.

2. What is your preferred (roller derby) position and why do you prefer it?

My favorite position is being the Jammer because the strategy involved is intense. Oh, and I absolutely love all the glory! And the fame!!

3. When and why did you start playing roller derby?

I started playing derby when the Rated PG league began, I had just moved back home to PG and my bff Sweet n Loaded was the captain of the Damned Dolls (one of our old interleague teams). I couldn't believe I passed my minimum skills, there were some skills that I had never done before.

4. Did you have any experience skating before you joined?

I grew up in PG and we are lucky to have the Roll-A-Dome (now the PG Dome) space. When I was in high school, I dabbled in Christianity and went to a few 'teen skate nights' at the Dome in the 90's. I never did accept Jesus into my heart but i did learn how to get around on quad skates.

5. How many hours a week do you train?

I usually train for derby 5-6 days a week. We are practicing three nights a week now, and I will sometimes double up with an extra workout on less strenuous practice nights. I do the Roller Derby Workout twice a week, plus plyometrics, and upper body/arm workout. I'm also trying to do more cardio outside of practice time, my goal is to do at least one 5km run once a week.

6. What is your favourite off-track workout?

I really love doing fusion class (yoga/pilates). It is a great workout and really improves overall strength and balance.

7. What is your favourite aspect of derby?

The booty shorts! I really love the transformation of women's confidence as they improve their derby skills over time and become more fit. Usually fresh meat show up in baggy shorts until they find their inner derby girl and start sporting progressively smaller and smaller shorts because they've realized, "Hey, I'm a hot mamma".

8. You fractured your ankle playing soccer this past summer, and had to stay off your skates while you were recovering, what did you do to stay involved in the Derby scene?

Well, at first I wallowed in self-pity for a few months until my ankle healed well enough that I wasn't hobbling around. Once I (finally) got my poopie pants off about derby I took over coaching the Rated PG Roller Girls. We started doing dryland training once a week, twice weekly practices, and went down to Williams Lake to play the Lake City Derby Girls. I loved coaching the girls! What a great and supportive bunch of women. I sadly stepped down as coach after SK8FEST in October and started skating again.

9. While your injury wasn't from derby, there is a degree of risk involved in the sport. In addition to getting good quality protective gear, what can derby skaters (and potential derby skaters) do to reduce the risk of injury?

It is really important to practice falling as much as you practice skating! It takes time to teach your body to kick the 'don't fall' instincts. Practice using your pads to protect yourself from falls, fall small, and sprint back into the pack.

10. Any advice for girls who want to join roller derby?

I think that girls should do training outside of derby practice. You don't have to do a lot, you don't even have to have a gym membership. There are tons of workouts that you can do in your living room, outside, or anywhere. I firmly believe that If you work out derby will be way more fun. Being healthy and active makes you feel invincible at derby and life!

(Late) Update on Our Oil City Bout

The Rated PG Rollergirls took their third inter-league win when they played the Oil City Tank’er Girls in Edmonton last weekend! Coached by Docta H. Dawg (who took over coaching duties after fracturing her wrist at our bout against Lake City) and Dirty Alice, our skaters battled a close game to finish with a 39 point lead (174 to 135).

Some things to note, for those of you who have been following the PG derby scene: Countess Bashory played her first bout as a Rated PG Rollergirl. Ms. Eerie is back! And, after being sidelined for the last two games due to a fractured ankle, Cruely Sue came back to score a whopping 75 points!

Many thanks to Oil City for hosting; to our refs for their outstanding refereeing; and to the Red Deer Belladonna players, Smacktastic and Lexis on Fire, who joined our team on the track! Rated PG can't wait for a rematch against the Tank'er Girls--April 9th at the Roll-A-Dome!

February Player Profile: Scout Flinch

Scout is is a quick and agile jammer, who can dish out some mean hits. She also happens to be a 4th year nursing student and counter staff at Handsome Cabin Boy Tattoo. She is originally from Castlegar, and sadly she is moving away this spring to live near the ocean, learn to surf, and (of course) start searching for an Island league to play with, because she'll never be able to leave derby.

1. What is your preferred (roller derby) position?

I love, love, love jamming.

2. When and why did you get started playing roller derby?

I got involved with derby when Bryndis (Miss Meouch) said that she was thinking about starting a rollerderby league in PG, and asked me if I would like to skate. I had never been on any kind of skate before in my life, but decided to give it a shot. The first couple of times I was out, I couldn't get the hang of the skating motion, and kept trying to walk on wheels.

3. How has the league changed since you joined?

The main change has been in the level of athletism. We are athletes first and foremost now. Trampy athletes.

4. How/why did you choose your derby name?

Scout Flinch is from Scout Finch, the protaganist in To Kill a Mockingbird, one of my all time favorite characters. My number (1984) is from the George Orwell title. I like books

5. What is your favorite aspect of derby?

Going fast.

6. Describe your most memorable derby-moment.

I think it was probably this summer, when we won against Lake City Derby. We worked so freaking hard before that bout, and it felt like every part of our team was tight. Pack skills, coaching, strategy, everything was just dialed in.

7. Do you have any bout-day rituals, habits, or superstitions? If so, what are they?

I'm a basket case of nervousness on bout days.

8. What are practices like?

There have been many times in the past few years that practices have saved my sanity. I've been super busy, and haven't had a ton of time for socializing. I feel like I get to see many of the people I care about at derby, so I don't feel like such a recluse.

9. Name two floor exercises that fresh meat and potential fresh meat can do at home to give them an advantage on the track.

Squats, plank, repeat until you want to die.

10. Do you have a derby wife?

Ginja Fightus, no question.

11. Any advice for girls who want to join roller derby?

Just come check out Fresh Meat. Then, if you're serious, go to public skate and work on your basic skating skills.

Sistah is a hard-hitting, fast-skating member of the Rated PG Rollergirls. When she's not on the track though, she's a mother to two small children (Laurel age 5 and Charlie age 3), a wife, a forester, and a friend. She loves knit, sew clothes, spoil her friends and family, and cook awesome food. Plus, she loves to learn something new every year (usually sport related).

Your Relationship with Derby

When did you get started playing roller derby?

About 3 years ago.

What is your preferred (roller derby) position?

I like them all, but power hitting is my forte.

What is the significance of your derby number?

It used to be my rugby number.

What is your favourite aspect of derby?

The community of amazing people

Describe your most memorable derby moment.

The first Rated PG Rollergirls bout at the civic centre--Red versus Blue. Everyone was pumped at the end of the bout, and it didn't matter who won or lost--we actually pulled it off after about a year of practice and organization!! All of the kids in the audience came down to track-side and the Rollergirls skated around and gave them all high fives. We felt like Rock-Stars!!

What is your favourite off-track workout?

Running, swimming, biking, skiing, hiking, snowboarding.

Motivation!!

Do you have any bout-day rituals, habits, or superstitions? If so, what are they?

Not really. I try to stay as calm and positive as possible. I try to be in an easygoing and fun mood, because I want all of the women on the team to feel awesome, ready, and confident. The annihilation will come at bout time! And I guess the wielding of a running chainsaw is starting to become a ritual at bouts as well.

Do you have a motivational quote?

Sometimes you're the Louisville Slugger, and sometimes you're the ball!

You were the team Captain for the White team at out most recent bout (Skatefest in PG). Although your team was down by twenty points for the first half, they came back strong in the second half and won 181 to 165. Any tips or tricks for keeping your team mates inspired and motivated?

At the beginning of the game, most of the players were kind of nervous, and some were doubting their skills. I asked everyone what they wanted to accomplish during the bout, and everyone came up with a kick-ass answer. At half-time I reminded people of their goals from the beginning of the game . . . I tried to encourage and pump up individuals and remind them how awesome they are! And I don't know what happened in the second half of the game, but I distinctly remember that the team simply gelled at a certain moment and started to kick more ass. I love seeing confidence grow and evolve over the course of a bout--both in individual team mates and in the team as a whole. It is infectious.

Advice for Fresh Meat and Potential Fresh Meat

Any advice for new skaters that might be scared to interact with veteran skaters?

Intimidation is hard to overcome. The first step is to put on your skates and say hi. For new skaters, if there is a veteran skater that you click with, stick with them. She will help you out during practice in learning and developing your skills. Over time you will start to get to know all of the Rollergirls and you will be glad that you did. Don't worry about how skilled you are, because at some point we [veterans] were all struggling with even standing up on skates!! If you can, join us for refreshments after practice from time to time, and participate in the fundraising activities too.

Any advice for girls who want to joing derby?

Come out and skate!!! Thursday nights from 7-8 is always Fresh Meat practice [at the Roll A Dome]. Sunday afternoon public skate is also a good time to come out to the Dome and meet some Rollergirls. Check out the Rated PG Rollergirls Facebook page and the bulletin at the Dome too.

Sk8fest was a great success!! We had girls come from Enderby, Edmonton, Williams Lake, Terrace, Armstrong, Fort St John to join with the Prince George girls to play some awesome derby. Teams were formed in the morning and after only 2 hours of skating together they prepared for some Black versus White action.

Black took an early lead in the first period, and managed to hold that 20 point margin for the entire first period. White was not ready to back down and came into the 2nd half hard! With amazing defense, and awesom jamming skills, the White team managed to close the gap, pull ahead, and managed to beat the Black team 181 to 165.

The Rated PG Rollergirls would like to thank all of the skaters who came to play with us, all of the volunteers who helped the bout run smoothly, awesome officials from near and far.

OK - this post is a little behind....but for those of you that hadn't heard, the RPGRG took on the Lake City Derby Girls (Williams Lake) in mid august, and (of course) totally kicked their asses, 172 to 117. Guest officials from Edmonton apparently were on the verge of crapping their pants when Sistah Viberosis skated onto the track with a running chainsaw! They were also impressed by our mad skills on the track and we have games against Edmonton (both home and away) in the works for the 2010/2011 season.

First Inter-League Bout A Success!!

The RPGRGs first ever inter-league bout against the Okanagan Peach Tarts last Saturday (April 17) went extremely well. The final score was 260 to 63 for RPGRGs. Although there was a big spread in the score, the Peach Tarts did amazingly well considering it was their second bout ever; they played with extreme heart and effort. We look forward to playing them again in the future, perhaps on their own turf. This bout also saw the debut of the PG Derby Brats - which the crowd loved.
Bout turnout was great; ~ 460 tickets were sold.
A huge thanks to all of the rollergirls for skating your asses off - all that training and practice shows! Also big thanks to the officials for keeping everyone in line. And last but not least, thank to all the volunteers; security, door people, bartenders, DJ, scorekeeper, and our ever-so-entertaining announcers; we couldn't do it without you guys!

Last night the RPGRG hosted their first exhibition bout of the season, @ the Roll-A-Dome. 440 + fans were in attendance to enjoy the amazing show of athleticism put forth by both the Yellow Head Cases and the Hart Breakers. After a neck-in-neck game, the Yellow Head Cases won by a narrow lead.

We're looking for ladies aged 19 and older to come skate with us!

Fresh Meat** practices will run every Thursday @ 7-8pm starting October 1st at the rollerdome.

The rollerdome is located at the intersection of hiways 16 and 97 (across from Mr. PG); use the road to the playhouse/curling & gold club to access.

Cost is $20 for your annual membership to the Rated PG RollerGirls Society (pay this once yearly) plus $5/practice (this includes your skate rental)

Gear required: Helmet, mouthguard, knee, elbow and wrist guards. Check thrift stores for used gear. Rolleskates are avilable at the rollerdome - and rental is included in your weekly $5 practice fee.

These practices are meant to allow women to learn the fundamentals of rollerskating and roller derby, meet people, have fun, and get some excercise, with the goal of having participants drafted to a team later in the season. Our league policy is to have closed practices, so there will be no lookee-loos or creepers.

Roller Derby Brat Camp! For Girls Ages 12-18

Join us over four days for the 1st ever Roller Derby Brat Camp for Girls! Sponsored by the Family YMCA of Prince George and Youth Around Prince, Brat Camp 2009 will create space for booty blocking, loud voices, and fast skating in GRRRL sport!

Camp is for girls aged 12-18! Registration starts August 10th at the Family YMCA of Prince George (2020 Massey). You must register in person to get a registration package!!

The camp is free and includes skates, helmets, a t-shirt, mouth guards and FOOD/Snacks! You'll learn how to skate and how to play roller derby. You'll get to pick your own derby name, create a persona, and be on a team (lemons vs. limes).

All participants NEED their own protective gear: elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards. These can be picked up cheap at any sports store, thrift store, or canadian tire. If you can't get your own gear please email us at info@youtharoundprince.com and we'll work to get some for you.

Last night the Rated PG RollerGirls Society brought Gunsmoke to town for some rockabilly fun times! We even threw an afterparty at the Riverstone with Edmonton's The Steady Hand!

The Rated PG RollerGirls took a quick skate around downtown Prince George on Saturday to join in the Pride Celebrations!

We handed out flyers for our upcoming Carwash! Hope to see you there!
